Veronica
born with a
shock of black hair
and the Midwife stared
and the good Reverend said
you’d better watch that one
she will be a wicked one
the blonde Sarah came second
some say she was sent in
to forgive the sins
of her evil twin
she was so small
that no one knew
that Mommy was
even carrying two
when the time came for the afterbirth
to astonishment and mirth
as mother pushed for all she was worth
little sarah entered on this earth
another tiny cry was heard
the Reverend whispered
praise the lord
he said the good lord knew her
and brought her here to do good through her
when the sisters used to play everything would be okay
until Sarah’d start to win and Veronica’d run away
come back with a big stick, hit her sister’s sunburn.
Parched summers and empty winters past
The two girls grew up fast
While Veronica preened in the looking glass
Sarah rode to the school house on an ass
Bright Sarah was a dirty kid she never washed up
she had a pretty face like a little squashed pup
she’d waken in the night her sister’d already be up
at the window what are you looking at
out theres nothing but dark
but Veronica didnt answer back
for some time
till she just said
I like black
Fair Sarah said Sister you seem either vain and insane
Adoring yourself or the devil's domain
in the daytime the mirror, at night out the window
She seemed not to hear her, really she did though
the night
was like
a mirror
to her
the night
was like
a mirror
to her
one day mother took them to the apothacary
to fetch herbs for a man with a fever down the street
thats when Veronica and the chemist would meet for the first time
years later they were lovers but he went off with another
she broke into his laboratory taking everything she could find
especially little purple fluid labelled ergot
she brought it to the reservoir and poured it and all the rest in
hoping to poison the town and ruin him
Soon they got together they were out for blood
Saying whoever did this would pay with everything they could
Some of them still mad stabbing their knives into the mud
screaming
How could someone do this to us?!
But there was only one the poison killed
As the good Reverend lay on his deathbed
The Townsfolk gathered together and said
Don't you worry We'll have this chemist's head
They were zealous and fervent
They listened as the Reverend
croaked these last judgement
I know who committed this crime
I told you once in a distant time
To watch out for that one
She's become a wicked one
He pointed at Veronica
But Sarah grabbed her and they escaped
and the bloodthirsty mob gave chase
Into the dark woods Where are we going
Out there's nothing but dark
For some time Sarah didn't answer back
then she whispered:
"Lets never go back."
